COPD; a progressive and life-threatening disease that is characterized by complaints of cough, sputum, dyspnea and wheezing as well as limited airflow.
The major risk factor of the condition is tobacco and tobacco products.
Previous treatments aimed to alleviate complaints rather than elimination of the disease. Balloon dilatation has demoded this approach in COPD.
Aim of balloon dilatation in COPD: It aims cleaning and dilating trachea in patients, who have stenosis in trachea and hypertrophy in cells that produce sputum secondary to tobacco and tobacco products.
This procedure is performed using special cameras called bronchoscope that allow us to visualize the trachea. Specially designed balloons are inserted into stenotic trachea through bronchoscope. The specially designed balloons are inflated in this segment at appropriate pressure and frequency, such that the lungs are not damaged. Sputum and hypertrophied tissue are scraped off with the balloon.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
Advantages of procedure:
*Painless
*Ability to resume ordinary daily life immediately after procedure
*Repeatable
*No age limit
*Foreign body is not implanted into body.
In the postoperative course, patients can easily breathe and climb stairs and they do not need help for daily routines; moreover, the need for oxygen therapy decreases.
